Respite Care

What Is Respite Care ?

Respite care provides temporary support when your informal, regular or family member caring for you are unavailable.

Our In-home respite care offers short-term relief by providing a trained carer to your home to care for your loved one. This service enables your main carer or family member to take a break, knowing that the person you care for is receiving professional support in a familiar setting. It can be used for various care needs, including assisted living, residential care, dementia care, and nursing care.

At D’Elevated Homecare & Support Services, we regularly offer respite care in various circumstances, all fully regulated. Some common situations where respite care is needed include:

  • After an accident
  • Hospital discharge
  • Recovery from surgery
  • Covering for a regular carer
  • When specialist care is required

What Does a Respite Carer Do?

A respite carer’s primary role is to ensure that care continues without disruption, allowing the primary carer to take a well-deserved break, while still providing the necessary support for the service user. All of our carers are fully trained to offer seamless, compassionate care whenever required, ensuring that both the service user and their family feel at ease.

Typical tasks a respite carer can assist with include:

Personal Care

Respite carers support service users with essential daily routines, including toileting, dressing, and maintaining personal hygiene. Their involvement ensures that the service user remains comfortable and cared for throughout the day, whilst the primary carer takes a step back to rest.

Housekeeping

Carers provide assistance with maintaining a clean and tidy living environment. This can include light cleaning, laundry, and organising the home, ensuring the service user’s surroundings remain pleasant and hygienic.

Mobility Assistance

Carers provide support with moving around the home, ensuring that the service user can do so safely and with confidence. This may involve guiding them through their daily activities or offering physical support to prevent falls or discomfort.

Medical Support

Respite carers are trained to assist with medical tasks such as catheter care, PEG feeding, administering medication, and managing suppositories. Their professional care ensures that the service user’s medical needs are consistently met during the primary carer’s absence.

Companionship

A core part of the role is providing companionship. Whether enjoying a conversation over a cup of tea or watching a favourite film, carers offer meaningful interaction, ensuring that the service user feels engaged and supported emotionally.

Getting Out of the Home

Carers accompany service users to social activities, shopping trips, or family visits. This ensures that the service user can continue to enjoy outings and maintain social connections, even when their regular carer is taking a break.

Meal Preparation

Carers are responsible for preparing nutritious meals and snacks, ensuring that the service user receives the right balance of food at appropriate times throughout the day. This may also involve accommodating dietary restrictions or preferences.

Errand Running

Respite carers manage essential errands such as picking up prescriptions, arranging appointments, or overseeing small household tasks. This allows the primary carer to rest assured that everyday responsibilities are still taken care of.
